Fishing
Southwest Virginia is home to a number of wonderful coldwater streams and fisheries. One of the best just happens to flow alongside the Creeper Trail for several miles. Whitetop Laurel Creek features areas open to artificial lures only as well as baitcasting so please pay attention to the posted signs. A valid Virginia fishing license for trout fishing is required year round to fish Whitetop Laurel.
Handicapped access and streamside casting platforms are available just below the Creek Junction trailhead. Enter from Highway 58 and park at Creek Junction.
Several stores in the area sell bait and tackle. One of the best for flycasters is located just off I-81's exit 19 in Abingdon. Turn south and look for the Virginia Creeper Fly Shop on your left. Owner and guide Bruce Wankel is an expert at fishing these area streams and can advise your fly selection to match the hatch.
Water levels are highest during the spring melt but Whitetop Laurel runs year-round.
